Las Vegas gets a whole lot more magic with The Wizard of Oz at the Sphere a unique, over-the-top modernization of the much-loved 1939 classic. Opening this August 28 high-tech interpretation reimagines the legendary movie experience through state-of-the-art technology, artificial intelligence (AI), and sensory stuff on a never-before-seen level. A 160,000-square-foot LED screen, haptic dining, and atmospheric effects like wind and fog really will transport every one of its ‘’guests’ into Dorothy’s world.
Here’s everything about this for which asking would be needed.
New Look at an Old Standard
At Sphere, the Wizard of Oz enhances the timeless tale of Dorothy and Toto and their journey along the Yellow Brick Road. It’s a state-of-the-art technological marvel that turns the basic motion picture into a play over Sphere’s giant 16K LED screen three football fields in size. This mammoth screen totally surrounds the viewer, giving a complete cinema inside movie experience.
Opening in a familiar theatrical-like screen, the show quickly transforms to fill the whole LED display. Edge of your seat just got set up by Judy Garland’s Over the Rainbow, quickly turning immediately into a creepy tornado—high-tech wind machines plus fans, fog machines, and haptic vibrating seats for added effects that really drag you into the heart of the storm with a pause in the “eye” of the tornado for added drama.
Technological Innovations
It uses today’s tech to rethink a classic film:
- Upgrade the New Frames: More than 1,800 unique A.I. elements were used to extend the visual world of the original film, further developing backgrounds, settings, and characters existing beyond the frame of the 1939 film.
- Non-A.I. Visual Effects: However, A.I. leaning heavily, scenes have had to be constructed using conventional VFX work and ‘real’ photography to that fluid feel.
Sensory Effects
Twenty industrial fans, three fog machines, and four haze machines conceive an almost lifelike representation of a wreaking tornado. Paper leaves, sponges painted like apples, and drone-operated flying monkeys fall from above as well as special sensory effects that accrue to key scenes – fog, snow, as well as bursts of fire.
Tornado: What can we expect? Well, more than 360 hours of inspection testing in the venue for developing perfecting tornado effects.
Partner’s price is no more than $80 million for a 101-minute filmic masterpiece produced by Sphere Studios, chopped to 77 minutes from the original production; the experience is more quickly paced, from specifically tuned to Sphere’s unique set up.
Pre and Post-Show Experience
You get the experience even before entering the theater. Inside there is a sepia-toned Kansas and caravan of Professor Marvel within Sphere. Post-show the Atrium turns into the bright Emerald City with a holographic wall for that magical after-show.
Life-size displays are added, as well: outside the Venetian Resort’s Waterfall Atrium (by Sphere), you’ll find Dorothy, the Scarecrow, the Tin Man, and the Cowardly Lion along with other figures on the Yellow Brick Road. Glinda the Good Witch will be on hand for photo ops in her famous pink bubble as well. These run until the end of the year, so that even more is added to the fun of the ‘Oz- themed’ experience.
A Unique Cinematic Experience
The multiplex is the new shrine where technology mates content with an experience infinitely remote from traditional film-watching as evidenced in ‘The Wizard of Oz at Sphere.’ A massive screen coupled with sensory effects walks one through Oz with Dorothy. Purists may well frown at what has been done from the original bright colors, pin-sharp detail, and immersive effects, however, throw an entirely new angle on the Much-Loved tale.
Dolan calls it ‘experiential storytelling’, where you engage the senses, ‘right’? Sight, sound, smell, touch. Total taste eludes them, but the whole is so deliriously visual and physical all ages are riveted by it.
