Fiji Airways Aims for U.S. Growth with New Routes and Partnerships

Fiji Airways, a small but ambitious airline with just 14 aircraft, is making waves in the global aviation industry. Recently named one of the top 10 airlines in the world by the Airline Passenger Experience Association (APEX), the carrier is now setting its sights on expanding in the United States. With a strong partnership with American Airlines and membership in the Oneworld Alliance, Fiji Airways is ready to grow its presence in the U.S. market. Here’s a look at how this tiny airline is planning for big success.

1. A Small Airline with Big Achievements

Fiji Airways may have a modest fleet, but its recent recognition by APEX shows it’s a force to be reckoned with. The airline’s focus on excellent customer service and unique offerings has earned it a spot among the world’s best airlines. This achievement has boosted the airline’s confidence as it looks to expand its reach, particularly in the U.S., which is a key market for its growth.

The airline operates flights to four U.S. destinations: Honolulu, Los Angeles, San Francisco, and Dallas-Fort Worth. These routes are vital for Fiji Airways, as the U.S., along with Australia and New Zealand, accounts for about 90% of its passenger traffic. Most of its customers are leisure travelers visiting Fiji’s beautiful islands, known for their stunning beaches and warm hospitality.

2. Dallas-Fort Worth: A Key Growth Opportunity

Fiji Airways began flying to Dallas-Fort Worth (DFW) three times a week in December 2024, and this route is seen as a major opportunity for growth. Unlike its Los Angeles route, where filling daily flights relies heavily on connecting passengers, Dallas offers a strong hub for connecting flights thanks to Fiji Airways’ partnership with American Airlines.

American Airlines, a dominant carrier at DFW, is part of the Oneworld Alliance, which Fiji Airways joined on April 1, 2025. This partnership allows American’s AAdvantage loyalty program members to earn and redeem points on Fiji Airways flights at the same rate as American’s own flights. Fiji Airways also has codeshare agreements with American, connecting to 240 cities, making it easier for passengers to travel to Fiji through Dallas. The airline plans to increase its Dallas service to four weekly flights early next year.

3. Oneworld Alliance and American Airlines Partnership

Joining the Oneworld Alliance has been a game-changer for Fiji Airways. The alliance, which includes major airlines like American Airlines, Qantas, and Cathay Pacific, gives Fiji Airways access to a global network of over 900 destinations. This partnership makes it easier for passengers to book flights to Fiji and beyond, while also offering benefits like priority check-in, lounge access, and extra baggage allowances for frequent flyers.

The partnership with American Airlines is especially important. By adopting American’s AAdvantage loyalty program, Fiji Airways allows its passengers to earn points and enjoy elite status perks when flying with either airline. This makes Fiji an attractive destination for American’s loyalty members, who can now easily book flights to the South Pacific.

4. Plans for Further U.S. Expansion

While Dallas is a key focus, Fiji Airways is also considering other U.S. cities for future growth. Seattle is one potential destination, where the airline could leverage its Oneworld partnership with Alaska Airlines. Although no immediate plans have been announced, expanding to Seattle could open up new opportunities for connecting passengers from the Pacific Northwest to Fiji and other Pacific destinations.

Fiji Airways’ CEO, Andre Viljoen, who spoke at the APEX/Future Travel Experience conference in September 2025, emphasized that the U.S. offers “massive opportunity” for growth. With 20% of its traffic coming from the U.S., the airline sees room to attract more American travelers seeking a tropical getaway.

5. Innovative Changes to Enhance the Passenger Experience

Fiji Airways is not just growing its routes—it’s also rethinking how it serves its passengers. The airline has made bold changes to stand out from competitors. For example, it has eliminated traditional amenity kits in business class, which Viljoen noted were often left behind by passengers. Instead, flight attendants now offer a tray of complimentary items like face creams, socks, and headsets, allowing passengers to choose what they need. This approach saves money and reduces waste while offering a more personalized experience.

Another change is the introduction of on-demand meal service in business class on flights to Los Angeles and Dallas. This means passengers can eat when they want, rather than at set times. The service will expand to San Francisco flights in November 2025 and across the airline’s network by mid-2026. These innovations show Fiji Airways’ commitment to improving the passenger experience and staying competitive.

6. Why the U.S. Market Matters

The U.S. is a critical market for Fiji Airways because of its large population and strong demand for leisure travel. Fiji’s islands, with their turquoise waters and vibrant coral reefs, are a dream destination for American tourists. By expanding its U.S. routes and strengthening partnerships, Fiji Airways hopes to attract more visitors to its home country, which relies heavily on tourism.

The airline’s codeshare agreements and loyalty program partnerships make it easier for Americans to plan trips to Fiji, whether they’re flying from Dallas, Los Angeles, or beyond. The Dallas route, in particular, offers a convenient option for travelers from across the U.S., thanks to American Airlines’ extensive network.

7. What’s Next for Fiji Airways?

As Fiji Airways prepares for growth, it faces both opportunities and challenges. The airline’s small size gives it flexibility, but it also means it must compete with larger carriers. By focusing on the U.S. market and leveraging its Oneworld and American Airlines partnerships, Fiji Airways is well-positioned to grow its share of American travelers.

With plans to increase flights to Dallas and explore new destinations like Seattle, Fiji Airways is showing that even a small airline can have big ambitions. Its recent APEX ranking proves that it’s already delivering a top-tier experience, and its focus on innovation and partnerships will likely drive further success.
